One of the most interesting tales of Oswaldtwistle history is about the Gobbin Lamp. The lamp marks the spot nearby an old mine.
If you were born above the lamp you were known as a Gobbiner. This is because a 'gobbin' is a sliver of coal and as the coal trucks went past the houses at this end of town the poor people used to pick up any slivers of coal 'gobbins' that had fallen off the truck.
So 'gobbiners' were poor people, later it became an insult but is now an affectionate term.
